Pel's Fishing Owl

Meet the enchanting resident of Platjan Lodge – the Pel’s Fishing Owl. This giant, round-headed beauty boasts a captivating ginger-rufous hue adorned with dusky bars, spots, and chevrons. Elusive and shy, you’ll find these majestic owls day-roosting in the well-hidden branches of towering trees along the permanent rivers and forested swamps that grace our lodge. Keep an eye out for these magnificent creatures in the tranquil backwaters.

Distinctive in its nature, the Pel’s Fishing Owl serenades the air with a deep, low, horn-like “Ooom” – a signature call that echoes through the wilderness. Listen closely, and you might also catch a series of intriguing grunts. The young owls, in their innocence, sometimes emit an eerie screeching sound: “wheeeuuu”.
